Animal Souls is an optional OoTMM feature that causes most animals to be absent from the world until their soul has been collected. For example, if the Soul of Dogs has not been collected, Dogs will not spawn. Animal Souls are collectable items. Much like every other item that joins them in the Item Pool, Animal Souls can be found in any fully randomised location.

Animal Souls is one of five categories of souls. When appearing as an in-game item, each animal soul is represented by a thin white emblem of a skull with blue flames dancing about its edges. Other kinds of souls are distinguished by alternate flame colours.

Animal Souls can be enabled separately for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. When animal souls (as with other kinds of soul) are enabled for both games, OoTMM provides an additional setting that allows animal souls to be 'shared'. This causes animal souls that are present in both games to be condensed into a single shared soul. For example, Cuccos can be found in both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask; when Shared Animal Souls is enabled, their individual souls are combined into one soul that, when collected, allows both of these animals to spawn.
