Hint Regions

Hint Regions are the names of regions that are found in hint text.

Note that the Major Regions Entrance Randomisation setting uses a different system of categorisation.

Overview

Every check in OoTMM is categorised into a single region for the purpose of hinting item locations. For example:

  • They say that the Progressive Hookshot (Sometimes Required) can be found in Gerudo Valley.
  • They say that Stock Pot Inn is Way of the Hero.

As a consequence of checks being categorised into only a single region, it can be observed that regions do not subsume or otherwise overlap each other. For example, an item that is in Stock Pot Inn is not considered to also be in East Clock Town.

Entrance Randomiser

Entrance Randomiser may cause a check's region to change. This mostly affects checks inside certain interiors and grottoes. Affected interiors and grottoes always inherit the region to which they are attached.

For example: if in Zora's Domain, the shop entrance leads instead to Kakariko Potion Shop, then all the items in this shop are now considered part of Zora's Domain; if a Way-Of-The-Hero (WOTH) hint names Zora's Domain, it could be referring to an item in Kakariko Potion Shop.

Tingle's Region

Tingle is his own region. It doesn't matter where he is physically located, his items are located in the 'Tingle' region.

For example, Ikana Canyon could be a foolish region and yet a 'Required' item might still be bought from him there.

Items in Multiple Locations

Some items are available in multiple locations. At the moment (and this could change in future), the item is only considered present in one primary region. It's possible to find a 'Required' item in a foolish region if the 'real' region of the item is elsewhere.

  • The Mailbox Item: mailboxes are located in North, East and South Clock Town, but the item from the mailbox is always regioned in South Clock Town.
  • The Clock Town Stray Fairy is found in Laundary pool (day) or East Clock Town (night), but is always regioned in Laundry Pool.
  • The Big Bomb Bag purchase: this can be bought from the Bomb Shop or the Curiosity shop depending on whether the North Clock Town theft has been thwarted. If entrance randomiser places these shops in different regions, the Bomb Shop region is prioritised.
  • The Goron Elder: he moves from Twin Islands to Goron Village on the third day, but his item is always regioned in Twin Islands.
  • [The four four-gossip grottos in Termina Field can be placed in different regions with grotto ER, but which region will the check be in? • Edit Article]

Here are some other semi-ambiguous cases that may cause confusion:

  • Items in the Windmill are regioned in Kakariko Village, whilst the Dampe's race items are regioned in Kakariko Graveyard (despite them being in the same map!) [and in ER, what happens? • Edit Article]
  • The reward for giving the postman the priority delivery letter is obtained in East Clock Town, thus this check falls in East Clock Town.
  • The bomb-able wall in the passage from East Clock Town to Astral Observatory is part of East Clock Town [and in ER, what happens? • Edit Article]
  • The item that drops from the moon's eye after observing Skull Kid with the telescope is part of Termina Field

Extra Hint Regions

When enabled, this option causes hints to be more granular for certain regions as follows:

  • Ganon's Castle Tower is split off from Ganon's Castle (such that they are now two separate regions)
  • Inverted Stone Tower Temple is split off from Stone Tower Temple (such that they are now two separate regions)
  • The Butler Race area is split off and becomes its own region (instead of adopting the region of whatever it's attached to; usually Deku Palace).
  • Goron Racetrack is split off and becomes its own region (instead of adopting the region of whatever it's attached to, usually Twin Islands).
