Random Settings is a feature in which many settings are picked at random. This contrasts with other forms of shuffles: shuffled items and shuffled entrances. For example, with random settings enabled, the Gerudo Card has a 50% chance of being shuffled. Without using random settings, Gerudo Card Shuffle can only be set to shuffled or unshuffled; which means that you'll know in advance whether it is shuffled or not.

Many settings are not configured randomly and are still controlled directly before generating the seed. This includes Tricks, Glitches and Junk Locations as well as hint and cosmetic options.

Goal

The Goal is picked at random:

  • 10/16 of the time, the goal is to beat Ganon and Majora.
  • 3/16 of the time, the goal is Triforce Hunt.
    • The number of Triforce pieces in the pool is a random number between (inclusive) 2 and 50 .
    • The number required to beat the seed is a random number between (inclusive) 1 and the total number of triforce pieces.
  • 3/16 of the time, the goal is Triforce Quest.

[Is it possible to figure out the goal using the in-game tracker? Are e.g.; 'path of courage' hints required to disambiguate Quest from Hunt? • Edit Article]

Logic

Logic is always enabled with random settings seeds.

  • 2/3 of the time, All Locations logic is used.
  • 1/3 of the time, Beatable Only logic is used.

It may be possible to work out which logic type has been used based on:

  • Hint Importance showing a check as 'unreachable', which is impossible with All Locations logic.
  • Going out of logic only to discover that an item is exclusively locked behind itself; making reaching it without going out of logic impossible.

Item Pool

The normal Item Pool is heavily favoured.

  • 10/15 of the time, Item Pool is set to normal.
  • 2/15 of the time, Item Pool is set to plentiful.
  • 2/15 of the time, Item Pool is set to scarce.
  • 1/15 of the time, Item Pool is set to minimal.

The item pool setting affects the number of heart pieces/containers in the item pool.

Shuffled Items/Checks

Unless otherwise noted, is not possible to infer the chances of one shuffle being enabled from the known status of another shuffle. For example, knowning that Ocarina Shuffle (OoT) is enabled does not make Master Sword Shuffle more likely. In probability jargon, we would say that each shuffle is an independent event (unless otherwise noted).

  • OoT's Ocarinas are shuffled 70% of the time.
  • The Master Sword is shuffled 40% of the time.
  • Weird / Pocket Egg Content Shuffle is enabled 50% of the time
  • Songs are shuffled to Song Locations 60% of the time; and Anywhere 40% of the time.

The following shuffles are enabled 50% of the time:

Scrubs

Scrub Shuffle (OoT) and Scrub Shuffle (MM) are not treated independently. The chances for each possibility[1] are as follows:

  • 3/8 chance of being shuffled in neither game
  • 3/8 chance of being shuffled in both games
  • 1/8 chance of being shuffled only in OoT
  • 1/8 chance of being shuffled only in MM

If the Scrub Shuffle status of one game is known, there is a 3/4 chance that the other game matches it.

Cows

Cow Shuffle (OoT) and Cow Shuffle (MM) are not treated independently. The chances for each possibility[2] are as follows:

  • 3/8 chance of being shuffled in neither game
  • 3/8 chance of being shuffled in both games
  • 1/8 chance of being shuffled only in OoT
  • 1/8 chance of being shuffled only in MM

If the Cow Shuffle status of one game is known, there is a 3/4 chance that the other game matches it.

Skultula Tokens

Gold Skulltula Tokens and House Skulltula Tokens are not treated independently. The chances for each possibility are as follows:

Table of probability values of the two Skulltula Shuffles with Random Settings enabled (to 1 D.P.)
MM
Setting none all
OoT none 38.7% 5.5% 44.2%
dungeons 8.2% 3.3% 11.5%
overworld 8.2% 3.3% 11.5%
all 5.5% 27.2% 32.7%
60.7% 39.3%

This table shows, for example, that:

  • There's a 60.7% chance that no Skulltulas in MM will be shuffled.
  • There's a 3.3% chance that all MM Skulltulas will be shuffled and only dungeon Skulltulas will be shuffled in OoT.

Random Settings cannot pick the House Skulltula Tokens Shuffle option Gold Skulltulas Only.

Map / Compass Shuffle (OoT)

The chances for each option for Map / Compass Shuffle are as follows:

  • 10/29 chance (~1/3) that maps/compasses are shuffled only in their Own Dungeon.
  • 7/29 chance (~1/4) that maps/compasses are shuffled Anywhere.
  • 7/29 chance (~1/4) that maps/compasses are Starting Items.
  • 5/29 chance (~17%) that maps/compasses are Removed (and therefore unobtainable).

Tingle Maps

The chances for each option for Tingle Maps Shuffle are as follows:

  • 10/29 chance (~1/3) that Tingle still sells his maps (i.e.; unshuffled, Vanilla option).
  • 7/29 chance (~1/4) that Tingle maps are shuffled Anywhere.
  • 7/29 chance (~1/4) that Tingle maps are Starting Items.
  • 5/29 chance (~17%) that Tingle maps are Removed (and therefore unobtainable).

[Does this mean there's a roughly 2/3 chance that Tingle sells random items? • Edit Article]

Small Keys

Small Key Shuffle (OoT), Small Key Shuffle (MM) and Hideout Small Key Shuffle are not treated independently.

Taken independently, and without any knowledge of the other setting, Small Key Shuffle (OoT) and Small Key Shuffle (MM) have the following probabilities for each option:

  • Own Dungeon: 5/11 chance.
  • Anywhere: 4/11 chance.
  • Removed: 2/11 chance.

If one of the game's Small Keys setting is known, then this increases the chance that the other game matches it. The probabilities work out as follows:

  • If one game is set to Own Dungeon, the other game is set to Own Dungeon roughly 72.7% of the time.
  • If one game is set to Anywhere, the other game is set to Anywhere roughly 68.2% of the time.
  • If one game is set to Removed, the other game is set to Removed roughly 59.1% of the time.
Probability Matrix for each combination of Small Key Shuffle (OoT) and Small Key Shuffle (MM) options.
MM
Setting Own Dungeon Anywhere Removed
OoT Own Dungeon 33.1% 8.3% 4.1% 45.45%
Anywhere 8.3% 24.8% 3.3% 36.36%
Removed 4.1% 3.3% 10.7% 18.18%
45.45% 36.36% 18.18%

Hideout Small Key Shuffle works a lot differently:

  • 50% of the time it is set based on what option was rolled for Small Key Shuffle (OoT) :
    • if Small Key Shuffle (OoT) is set to Anywhere, so is Hideout Small Key Shuffle
    • if Small Key Shuffle (OoT) is set to anything else, Hideout Small Key Shuffle is set to Own Dungeon
  • The other 50% of the time, it is set as follows:
    • 10/17 chance it is set to Own Dungeon
    • 7/17 chance it is set to Anywhere

It is not possible to Random Settings to set Hideout Small Key Shuffle to Vanilla.

Boss Keys

Boss Key Shuffle (OoT) and Boss Key Shuffle (MM) are not treated independently.

The interdependence of the two Boss Key Shuffles is identical to the interdependence of Small Key Shuffle (OoT) and Small Key Shuffle (MM). All the probabilities are the same; please refer to the previous section for probability data relating to the Boss Key Shuffles.

Ganon Boss Key Shuffle is only relevant when the Goal has been set to Ganon and Majora. The probability of each of the options depends also on what has been selected for Boss Key Shuffles (OoT):

  • If Boss Key Shuffles (OoT) is found to be Own Dungeon, there is a roughly 59.3% chance that Ganon Boss Key Shuffle will be set to Ganon's Castle.
  • If Boss Key Shuffles (OoT) is found to be Anywhere, there is a roughly 63.0% chance that Ganon Boss Key Shuffle will also be set to Anywhere.
  • If Boss Key Shuffles (OoT) is found to be Removed, there is a roughly 68.5% chance that Ganon Boss Key Shuffle will also be set to Removed.
Probability Matrix of each combination of Boss Key Shuffle (OoT) and Ganon Boss Key Shuffle options, assuming that Goal has been set to Ganon and Majora.
Ganon Boss Key
Setting Removed Vanilla Anywhere Ganon
Boss Keys (OoT) Own Dungeon 8.4% 4.2% 5.9% 26.9% 45.45%
Anywhere 6.7% 3.4% 22.9% 3.4% 36.36%
Removed 12.5% 1.7% 2.4% 1.7% 18.18%
27.61% 9.26% 31.14% 31.99%

[ If the Ganon Boss Key is 'removed', is there a way to tell this from OoTMM's in-game tracker? • Edit Article]

Skeleton Key

Each game's Skeleton Key cannot be added to the pool if the Small Keys for that game have been removed.

If the Small Keys are not removed, then the probabilities for Skeleton Keys are as follows:

  • 3/8 chance: both games have no Skeleton Key.
  • 3/8 chance: neither game has a Skeleton Key.
  • 1/8 chance: OoT has a Skeleton Key but MM does not.
  • 1/8 chance: MM has a Skeleton Key but OoT does not.

There is a 3/4 chance that both games have the same setting. If the Skeleton Key status of one game is known, the other game has a 3/4 chance of having the same status.

Silver Rupees

The chances for each option for Silver Rupee Shuffle are as follows:

  • 15% chance that Silver Rupees are unshuffled (found in their Vanilla locations).
  • 50% chance that Silver Rupees are shuffled within their Own Dungeon.
  • 35% chance that Silver Rupees are shuffled Anywhere.

Items

Bombchu Behaviour

The Bombchu Behavior (OoT) and Bombchu Behavior (MM) settings are not treated independently.

Each of the four options for Bombchu Behavior have equally likely chance of being picked, however; if one game's setting is known, there is a 62.5% chance that the other game will match it. Each of the other 3 options has 12.5% chance of being selected.

Souls

The Soul Shuffles have:

  • A 25% chance of all being enabled
  • A 25% chance of all being disabled
  • A 50% chance of each Soul Shuffle being considered individually, with each soul shuffle then having an individual chance of being enabled of 50%.
